“The health secretary, Patricia Hewitt, is almost certain to be sacked by Gordon Brown” was the almost confident “revelation” from The Sunday Times’ political team.

Sadly, the exclusive failed to impress the Daily Mail’s acerbic Peter Mackay.

“We’ve been hearing for weeks that Hewitt’s going to be fired,” wrote the Scotsman wearily in his column the next day.
