Now press releases count as ‘exclusive’

The Times political correspondent Sam Coates, ever keen to stress the “exclusivity” of his toils at the House of Commons, has adopted a breathless tone which has left colleagues chuckling.

In one dreary tale about grammar schools, Coates said Tory MP Graham Brady had “passed data to The Times”. In the same story, Coates gets even more excited as Brady “passes a letter to The Times”.

Put simply, Coates printed a press release from a Tory MP who was keen to see his story in the paper – not exactly Watergate, is it?
