George Jones – a gentleman to the end

The Daily Telegraph pulled out all the stops for a farewell party for departing political editor George Jones, who had been at the helm of the Telegraph’s lobby team for more than 20 years.

They chose Mosimann’s in Knightsbridge, so it was off to the Mappin & Webb room to hear people sing George’s praises.

One-time editor Charles Moore couldn’t be there, but he sent an email saying, among other things: “George has been the greatest political editor of The Daily Telegraph in living memory. We should all be proud of his scoops and splashes for the paper over so many years.”

Meanwhile, Tory MP Ken Clarke made a speech saying that if you read any splash written by George, “you knew you could believe it”.

The other speaker was former Guardian political editor Michael White. The great and the good were there, including the Lords Robertson, Wakeham, Fowler and Heseltine.

George asked the guests to raise their glasses to the Telegraph. Now there’s a gent, for you – given that the paper sacked him!
