Williams to follow in BBC DG’s footsteps

So good luck to Ed Williams, head of corporate affairs at Reuters, who’s off to take up a plum post in a similar field at the BBC.

Like Mark Thompson, the current director-general, Ed, too, was turned down for the BBC’s graduate training scheme when he was a young lad.

I hear that before going into journalism, Ed trained as a classical pianist. Eileen Wise, one of Ed’s colleagues at Reuters, tells me: “It is a real loss to Reuters, but we all wish him well. He’s sure to make a big and much-needed difference in the way in which the BBC and its management are seen in both the public’s and media’s eyes.”
