Defiant hack warns Trinity Mirror: “You can’t touch me!”

Not every journalist at the Birmingham Post and Mail, it seems, was left reeling by news that 85 jobs could be lost as a result of Trinity Mirror’s plans for a shake-up of the two titles.

Take feature writer Jo Ind. Two days after learning that her job “along with those of my fellow journalists, is seriously under threat”, she told readers, via her blog, of her reaction to the grim announcement.

“But did I care?” she wrote. “No, not that day because my great great great great grandmother was Elizabeth Fry and if she could reform the prison service, then I was damn sure I could work out how to support my family even if I didn’t have a job in the depth of a recession. You can’t touch me Trinity Mirror, I’m made of noble, worthy, heroic, pioneering, life-transforming stuff!”

That’s the spirit.

Reader delivers initial verdict on editor Dyson’s blog

It seems not all readers are enjoying editor Steve Dyson’s blog at the Birmingham Mail website.

Someone calling herself NannyGram left a rather disagreeable comment beneath one of his latest entries. As well as delivering a string of insults, it also, by means of an acrostic (read the initial letter of each line), carries a rather crude message.

It remains to be seen if Dyson decides to delete the message, purely to avoid offending his readers with such bad language, of course.

The Birmingham Post and Mail is currently in the midst of a round of cost-cutting with many journalists taking voluntary redundancy.

Reporter Adam Smith decided to announce his resignation in flamboyant style while being interviewed in America where he was covering the election.

Evidently enjoying himself, when asked why he was in the US covering the election he said: “There’s so many women here, it’s brilliant.”

He ended his broadcast saying: “My name is Adam Smith, also known as Steve Zackaranda, who has just resigned from the Birmingham Mail, Birmingham Post and Birmingham Sunday Mercury to set up my own magazine. Fuck you, I’m doing what I want to.”
