Jordan retweets Dan Wootton HIV jibe

Press Gazette’s recent survey of showbiz journalists revealed that glamour model Jordon has not exactly endeared herself to Fleet Street’s finest - and Axegrinder can see why.

When Press Gazette magazine asked showbiz journalists to name their least favourite celebrity, Jordan (Katie Price), topped the list.

Now word reaches me that she has sparked controversy by repeating a message on Twitter that the she used her Twitter site to retweet a fan’s suggestion that she should “start writing” that News of The World showbiz journalist Dan Wootton “has HIV” and that the Daily Star’s Gemma Wheatley “has crabs”.

“They make up #!@%*# so y cant u? (sic)” the original message read.

The timing of the message, on World Aids Day, could have been better.

Price has apparently since deleted the message, while the original poster of the message has deleted their entire account.

Essex Chronicle website accused of taking a shine to the BNP

Local newspaper journalists have done a lot of soul-searching over the years about how to cover the BNP.

Some newspapers simply refuse to because they fear stoking up hatred along racial lines in the communities they serve.

This is not a stance taken by Northcliffe-owned Totalessex.co.uk, the website of the Essex Chronicle, which carries this curiously gung ho report about a meeting of the local BNP branch on its website.

The piece begins:

PROUD nationalists were asked to dig deep to support an election candidate when the Brentwood branch of the BNP met for the first time.

Buoyant supporters packed into a back room of a patriotic pub for the inaugural meeting of the Brentwood and Chelmsford branch – which has been founded in response to the party’s growing membership.

Paul Morris, Parliamentary candidate for Brentwood and Ongar, said: “It was a good turnout considering it was very last minute.

The piece concludes:

Unlike other parties which are funded by unions and wealthy donors, the BNP relies purely on members’ donations and as the first half of the meeting drew to a close, Mr Morris stood up and asked for donations.

“Michael Bateman is standing in Chelmsford and we need a £500 election deposit,” he said. “Can anyone afford to put £500 in the pot?”

Searching faces scoured the room until a man who had until then sat quietly in the corner, put his hand up to pledge £100. Others then thrust crisp £50 notes in the pot before the less well-off handed over their screwed up £10 and £20 notes.

There was much applause and hand shaking as the money came flooding in, uniting the room in the campaign to bring about radical change.

My tipster said that “other local journalists are disgusted” by the piece.

Commenter Kev from Chelmsford writes: “This looks as though a BNP press release has been regurgitated in its entirety.”

UPDATE: The story, which Axegrinder now understands appeared in the Brentwood Gazette, has been taken down from the website.

Standard takes work experience slave labour to new level

The Evening Standard has taken work experience exploitation to a new level by charging a budding journalist £1,500 for the privilege of spending a week toiling on its newsdesk.

It was one of the winning lots in the Standard’s annual Christmas auction - which raised £200,000 for the charity Greenhouse.

It comfortably beat lunch with Sebastian Coe - £1,120 (Axe would rather spend a week on the Standard newsdesk than spend a lunchtime with odious Coe any time) and lunch with Robert Peston - £1,071.

The top lot was a game of table-tennis followed by dinner with Standard City editor Chris Blackhurst and Goldman Sachs co-chief executive Michael Sherwood with fetched £14,600. This was rather more than the £3,600 bid for dinner with editor Veronica Wadley at The Wolseley.

The Birmingham Post and Mail is currently in the midst of a round of cost-cutting with many journalists taking voluntary redundancy.

Reporter Adam Smith decided to announce his resignation in flamboyant style while being interviewed in America where he was covering the election.

Evidently enjoying himself, when asked why he was in the US covering the election he said: “There’s so many women here, it’s brilliant.”

He ended his broadcast saying: “My name is Adam Smith, also known as Steve Zackaranda, who has just resigned from the Birmingham Mail, Birmingham Post and Birmingham Sunday Mercury to set up my own magazine. Fuck you, I’m doing what I want to.”
