Heinadg helnadg heuladg…production balls-up of the day

Another exhibit for Axegrinder’s dark museum of production howlers - this time from Northcliffe’s ThisisGloucestershire website. It’s got the lot: dummy headline copy, pic up the wrong way round and mistakes-a-plenty in the caption.

Sadly, this has been a year of regional press production cock-ups. And it can be no coincidence that it has also been the year of sub-editor redundancies and the creation of remote subbing factories - particularly at Northcliffe.

Here is the link to the story, which hopefully will be fixed soon (writing at 12.50pm) has now been fixed.

Among several comments are Kath from Cheltenham writing at 8.57am: “TiG, This is the second time in less than a week that you have shown a nonsensical headline like the one above. When your last proof reader left did he turn the lights out??

Auschwitz railroad pic used to illustrate train-rage story

The Iliffe News and Media-owned Cambridge News had a curious choice of photo to illustrate a story about a woman who was subjected to verbal abuse on a train by thuggish Cardiff City football club fans.

The woman apparently became so fed up when the driver refused to intervene that she stood in front of the train forcing it to terminate at a village station, leaving the fans with a walk home.

The choice of picture used to illustrate the story is unmistakably the railway line leading up to the gates of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland where, according to some estimates, more than one million Jews were massacred by the Nazis.

Axegrinder understands that the story page in question was created from a Press Association feed to all the Illiffe newspaper websites of national stories - so it was PA’s fault, rather the Cambridge News.

The offending pic should now have been changed and PA has issued an apology for the mistake.

The agency said in a statement: “We apologise for any offence cause by this unfortunate human error. The photograph was removed from the story as soon as we realised the mistake and we have taken steps to ensure this does not happen again in the future.”

Warning: Regional media group Archant may contain nuts

Nuts are off the menu at regional media group Archant following a “potentially severe incident” involving a member of staff.

One response might have been to suggest that the individual involved brings in their own lunch in future. Archant has instead decided to embark on a group-wide nuts fatwa.

Not content to ban nuts from catering outlets, staff have also been banned from bringing “nuts and nut products” on to compamy premises.

Surely such drastic action is only going to send nut-consumption ‘underground’, possibly leading to unregulated roasting, high salt content, black-market prices and so on…

Here is the full amazing email from  Group Health and Safety Manager Lester Marshall:

Nut allergy is on the increase and the latest estimates are that 1 in 200 people may have this life-threatening condition.  Following a potentially severe incident with one of our staff this week we have taken expert advice and then discussed the matter at Group level.  After careful consideration we have taken the decision to instruct Olive catering to remove products that contain nuts or nut products, which will happen over the next few weeks.

Whilst we are doing all that we can to remove nuts from the premises we cannot guarantee that all products will be nut-free, and if you have an allergy you are advised to continue to read food labels.  Such action is now commonplace in schools and colleges with many employers following their lead after assessing the risks.

As this can be a life-threatening condition, we ask staff to refrain from bringing nuts and nut products into the building.

We are sorry that this may be a slight inconvenience to those who enjoy these products but this is far outweighed by the risk of not responding appropriately.

A nut allergy factsheet can be found on the Intranet together with some questions and answers.

Essex Chronicle website accused of taking a shine to the BNP

Local newspaper journalists have done a lot of soul-searching over the years about how to cover the BNP.

Some newspapers simply refuse to because they fear stoking up hatred along racial lines in the communities they serve.

This is not a stance taken by Northcliffe-owned Totalessex.co.uk, the website of the Essex Chronicle, which carries this curiously gung ho report about a meeting of the local BNP branch on its website.

The piece begins:

PROUD nationalists were asked to dig deep to support an election candidate when the Brentwood branch of the BNP met for the first time.

Buoyant supporters packed into a back room of a patriotic pub for the inaugural meeting of the Brentwood and Chelmsford branch – which has been founded in response to the party’s growing membership.

Paul Morris, Parliamentary candidate for Brentwood and Ongar, said: “It was a good turnout considering it was very last minute.

The piece concludes:

Unlike other parties which are funded by unions and wealthy donors, the BNP relies purely on members’ donations and as the first half of the meeting drew to a close, Mr Morris stood up and asked for donations.

“Michael Bateman is standing in Chelmsford and we need a £500 election deposit,” he said. “Can anyone afford to put £500 in the pot?”

Searching faces scoured the room until a man who had until then sat quietly in the corner, put his hand up to pledge £100. Others then thrust crisp £50 notes in the pot before the less well-off handed over their screwed up £10 and £20 notes.

There was much applause and hand shaking as the money came flooding in, uniting the room in the campaign to bring about radical change.

My tipster said that “other local journalists are disgusted” by the piece.

Commenter Kev from Chelmsford writes: “This looks as though a BNP press release has been regurgitated in its entirety.”

UPDATE: The story, which Axegrinder now understands appeared in the Brentwood Gazette, has been taken down from the website.

Brum Mail reporter in Youtube exclusive: F*** You, I resign

The Birmingham Post and Mail is currently in the midst of a round of cost-cutting with many journalists taking voluntary redundancy.

Reporter Adam Smith decided to announce his resignation in flamboyant style while being interviewed in America where he was covering the election.

Evidently enjoying himself, when asked why he was in the US covering the election he said: “There’s so many women here, it’s brilliant.”

He ended his broadcast saying: “My name is Adam Smith, also known as Steve Zackaranda, who has just resigned from the Birmingham Mail, Birmingham Post and Birmingham Sunday Mercury to set up my own magazine. Fuck you, I’m doing what I want to.”
