France - regional elections; second round

Regional and cantonal elections, held over two rounds, in 26 administrative areas: 22 mainland regions and four overseas domains/territories - Guadeloupe, Guyane, Martinique and La Réunion. In last elections, March 21 and 28, 2004, the ruling, centre-right UMP and its allies suffered sweeping losses to the benefit of the Parti Socialiste and its partners from the political left. The results - approximately 49.8% of the vote went to PS/left parties and 37% to UMP/centre-right parties - reversed a sharp swing to the right in the 2002 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

Matalan murder charges - sentencing

Kobina Essel, 18, appears for sentencing after being found guilty of the murder of 33-year-old shop manager Jamie Simpson, who was stabbed in the neck as he cashed up at the Hackney branch of Matalan on March 22, 2008. Roy Williams, 31, Duane Owusu, 20, and Jamal Chambers, 18, were cleared of murder but found guilty of conspiracy to rob, while Simeon Jumah, 25, Anthony Maina, 20, and Randy Osei-Owusu, 17, were found guilty of manslaughter.

Police Sergeant Delroy (Tony) Smellie appears charged with assault by beating of Nicola Fisher on April 2 2009 at a demonstration mourning the death of Ian Tomlinson in the City of London. Smellie was charged September 28 2009 following an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
