Well done Jon! Basildon Echo is a great paper - in fact that edition is always better than the Southend edition of the same paper. Copy is always polished, so not only must they have great reporters, Jon being a classic example, but an extremely good news editor.

Mike Amos should not have been given Sports Journalist of the Year since all he does is write highly stylised whimsical pieces about obscure and mildly amusing sporting teams. He does not
    i) Have to negotiate the appalling politics and infighting within North-East Premiership club reporting and emerge with his integrity intact
ii) Have to coax words out of the mouths of inarticulate multi-millionaires and attempt to turn them into workable copy
iii) Have to write match reports up at gone 10pm from some European backwater with one dodgy phone point
iv) Head off to the reserves on a wet Monday night and try to identify sundry stiffs on the two sides and spot who’s in the stand to get a story out of it
Fair enough to reward Amos for his writing style - it’s not my cup of tea although some people like it - but he is not a sports journalist in the fullest sense of the word.
