Education correspondents can breath a sigh of relief.

Constitutional Affairs Secretary Lord Falconer intends to designate academy schools and private prisons as public bodies under the Freedom of Information Act, Steve Wood at UK FOIA Blog reports.

Under the existing law, academy schools are not covered under the FOIA. Turning a school into an academy would have effectively removed it from the list of public bodies to which journalists can make FOI requests.

Wood has been encouraging readers of his blog to petition their MPs on this matter.
