MPs have tabled a Commons early day motion expressing concern at the current job cuts in the regional press. They are calling on proprietors to invest in “quality journalism”.

Do you think it will do any good?

Proprietors, regional and national, don’t mind the quality of journalism, they only feel the width.

MPs (and when did you ever see one up in time to sign what the rest of us would regard as an Early Day Motion?) have an interesting definition of ‘quality journalism’: friendly, pusillanimous and endless reporting of their kow-towing parliamentary utterances.

    They deserve one another.
