The New York Times yesterday unvieled a bold relaunch of its web site.

The American newspaper has decided to make use of the much larger monitors the vast majority of its users now have, filling out a full screen at 1024 pixels. There are new features highlighting user feedback, such as a list of the most-frequently blogged and searched-for items on the site.

A large video item has a prominant place on the front page. In a letter to readers, NYTimes.com editor Leonard M. Apcar wrote: “Writing an open lett to Five years ago, when the prior design debuted, multimedia was in its infancy and video quality was poor. Now, video and multimedia are fundamental elements of our Web presentation. We now have video presentations prominently displayed on our home page and a tab at the top of the page to take you directly to all our video offerings.”

Via Newsdesigner.com, we see that Khoi Vinh, the site’s new design director, who joined the paper when the project was already in the works, is impressed even if he can’t claim credit.
