MSM should think before jumping on “the blogwagon”

Kevin Anderson, soon to become the Guardian’s head of blogging and interaction, has been giving a presentation that everyone in mainstream journalism who is thinking about blogging should keep in mind.

Anderson says most blogging efforts by big media have constituted an “unthinking, headlong rush towards the blogosphere” — an attempt jump aboard what has been called “the blogwagon”.

But blogging shouldn’t just be about using a trendy content-management system to create “news sushi” — remixing stories that are being written anyway — nor simply a new platform for the same established voices, Anderson argues. Journalists should blog to get closer to their audiences, to bring new voices into their stories, and to file raw stories from the field.
