The relative ranking of Britain’s newspaper web sites’ traffic is largely unaffected by the decision announced today by web measurement firm Nielsen/Netratings to discontinue ranking sites in order of total pageviews in favour of rankings based on time spent on a site.

According to new time-based web traffic rankings for May provided by Nielsen/Netratings, Guardian Unlimited remains the top national newspaper web site, with 34.9m total minutes and 12:58 per person. The Sun Online is second, with 23.8m total minutes and 12:04 minutes per person.

The new rankings place Times Online third with 21.25m total minutes, ahead of Telegraph.co.uk at 15.2m minutes, despite the Telegraph site having a slightly larger total audience.

The new figures also reveal that Scotsman.com, which is ranked sixth overall behind DailyMail.co.uk, attracts the longest user sessions among newspaper web sites, with 17:35 minutes per person.
