This all makes a lot of sense. I have also found that many people prefer to read news on the web because they can avoid a lot of the stuff they don't want to read.
People who simply want to read hard news and a few news-related features are left with very little, because most papers are 50 per cent sport, at least 30 per cent "celeb" gossip (of which maybe one per cent is about real celebs as opposed to reality TV attention-seekers), and the rest mainly PR-led stuff from the police and political parties.

Add to that the advertising supplements - most of which are dumped in bins outside supermarkets to avoid paying for them to be disposed of - and there's not a lot of reason to buy a newspaper.
