The trick you're missing is the flexibility of Twitter. Facebook is your identity - and on one is going to become your friend based on updates they can't see anyway.
Twitter is just the updates, searchable, browsable, social, and most importantly: deliverable to mobiles. You can also aggregate feeds. 
Take a look at the aggregated collection of tweets that I made and you can see how it might work. 
OH, and since I wrote that two more students started twittering, so only a few left...</description>
