Sun editor Rebekah Wade, who yesterday gave evidence to the House of Lords Communications Committee on newspaper ownership, told peers “we would never give The Sun away for free”.

Reuters reports that Wade was optimistic about the future of The Sun in print form, despite its circualtion falling below 3m for the first time since 1974.

In answer to a question from the Bishop of Manchester Nigel McCulloch about the paper’s topless Page 3 girls, Wade told him “I think page 3 is very popular with bishops”. With some traditional Sun irreverence, she said that if he wanted to meet one of the models, all he had to do was ask.

Update: Journalism.co.uk, meanwhile, notes Wade’s statement that The Sun’s online revenue would only become significant in ‘14 to 15 years time’.
