The US magazine industry was dealt a devastating blow last week when Wal-Mart took 1,000 titles from its shelves. The superstore chain accounts for more than 15 percent of all American magazine newstand sales.

The company, which owns ASDA in the UK, has not commented on the reasons for its decision. But according to sources quoted by US magazine industry title Folio, “the company’s Sustainability Committee—and its commitment to reducing waste—played a key role in its decision“.

According to Folio, Wal-Mart’s formula was to cut all the magazines that were not in the top half of a sales ranking of magazines in any Wal-Mart store.
