Newspaper readership is in sharp decline and papers are losing once-loyal readers, according to a report examining how people’s attitudes to society have changed over the years.

The British Social Attitudes survey, reported in today’s Financial Times and Guardian, found that only 20 per cent of graduates today regularly read a quality newspaper, compared with 50 per cent in 1986.

Strathclyde University politics professor John Curtice told the FT: “Popular newspapers were once a mechanism whereby information about politics could reach those with little inclination to follow political matters. Now they are increasingly unable to fulfil that role.”
