Some 99 per cent of Sun readers want the death penalty restored - according to a poll in which around 95.000 voted. The vote was called in response to recent murder convictions including that of Suffolk strangler Steve Wright.
Despite the overwhelming response The Sun, in its leader today, argued against the return of the hangman. It said: “Emotion cannot dictate a nation’s system of punishment.”
