Daily Mail newsdesk secretary Joan Gabbedey, described in the Mail today as a “Fleet Street legend and a Daily Mail institution”, died yesterday aged 79.
Gabbedey worked for 39 years at Associated Newspapers, 36 of them at the Mail, produced some16,500 news schedules and worked with 14 news editors - including current Mail editor Paul Dacre in the 1980s.
He says in today’s paper: “Joan was part of the very fabric of the Mail. The paper was her life and she was a source of wisdom, support and guidance to her many news editors and hundreds of reporters she worked with, many of whom became lifelong friends.”
