ITV executive chairman Michael Grade has made a plea for the deregulation of ITV to allow it to continue funding news in the face of increasing competition for ad revenue.

Writing in the Observer, Grade describes some of ITV’s public service obligations as “outdated”, adding: “The strictures of the regulatory rulebook under which we labour are ripped straight out of the book named A History Of Telly: The Early Years.”

“A plurality of news voices and British programmes for British audiences are two jewels well worth fighting for,” he says. “Under the status quo, neither are as sustainable as they should be.”
