Archant Suffolk is planning to make at least 20 sub-editors redundant and replace them with designers without journalism qualifications, MediaGuardian is reporting.
The company, which produces the East Anglian Daily Times and the Ipswich Star, is currently in a one-month consultation with staff who have been told they can reapply for their jobs.
Advertising designers with no journalistic experience are reportedly being drafted in to fill some positions.
On Saturday parent company Archant posted a 3.4 per cent rise in profits to £30.5 million.
