Public service broadcasters across Europe are being warned that their websites must offer something distinctive to commercial rivals if they are to continue receiving financial aid.
The EU competition commissioner, Neelie Kroes, has warned that PSB groups will face stricter rules governing their web offering to prevent competition with private companies.
“It certainly isn’t obvious to the taxpayer why public broadcasters should be using state money to run online video games or dating clubs,” Kroes said.
