Newsquest is proposing to close its printing press in York next month with the loss up to 22 jobs.

York-based daily The Press reports today that due to “highly challenging trading conditions” its printing plant in York could be closed.

The Newsquest-owned Northern Echo and its associated weeklies are currently printed in York, as well as The Press.

Under the plan, printing of the York Press will move to Bradford, while the Northern Echo would be printed under contract by Trinity Mirror at its Teesside printworks.

York Press NUJ father of chapel Tony Kelly said: “[It is] outrageous that such a long-standing tradition of a thriving newspaper being printed in York, one of England’s greatest cities, will soon be at an end.”

NUJ northern organiser Chris Morley added: “There would appear to be a new agenda here of supposedly rival companies striking cosy deals with each other to allow them to slash staff numbers still further.”
