The Daily Mail has written to The Guardian to correct “another myth” about its sex education coverage.

On Tuesday, The Guardian’s Polly Toynbee wrote, in an article on the value of sex education: “‘Failed by liberals’ was the Daily Mail’s leader, pressing the repeat key on its increasingly cult-like belief that sex education causes sex.”

She went on to accuse the Mail of “cheating” in the way it presented teenage pregnancy statistics.

But, in today’s Guardian letters page, Charles Garside, Daily Mail assistant editor, writes: “Polly Toynbee (Comment, 17 February) twice alleges that the Mail has launched a campaign against sex education.

“Before another myth is created about the Mail, could we set out the facts. The Mail last week wrote two leaders on teenage pregnancy. Neither mentioned sex education.”
