Audio: Archant London boss on threat of council papers

It’s considered one of the toughest markets in the UK to make a local newspaper work, but London was home to both of the winners of weekly newspaper of the year at the 2009 Regional Press Awards.

If dealing with the recession and the advertising downturn wasn’t enough, the East London Advertiser - which was named best weekly with a circulation of less than 20,000 - has had the added pressure of a well-funded council newspaper competing with it for ads.

Archant London editorial director Richard Thomson spoke to Press Gazette after the award win. He explained how the Tower Hamlets Council paper, East End Life - and council papers as a whole - threatened the established regional press.
