The Sunday Mirror has paid tribute to a former industrial editor of the paper whose contacts book once boasted the private telephone number of Clement Attlee and Winston Churchill.
Mike Edwards has died at the age of 89. He began his journalism career at the age of 14, the Sunday Mirror reports, as a cub reporter on the Surrey Times.
He began his Fleet Street career on the Sunday Mirror’s forerunner the Sunday Pictorial after being demobbed following the Second World War.
He was headhunted by the Sunday Mirror after retiring from the Daily Mail in 1985 and continued to work for the paper up until his death from a heart attack on 9 May.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber told the paper that Edwards was “a model of polite persistence - ideal qualities for a journalist”.
