The possibility that there was an email-hacking scandal brewing at The Times first emerged in a few lines of written evidence published by the Leveson Inquiry on 10 January, and exploded yesterday as Times editor and News International issued a comprehensive mea culpa about the affair.

Former BBC executive Blair Jenkins has suggested all journalists -working across print, broadcast and online - should sign up to the same code of conduct.
The Editors’ Code currently primarily applies to print publications and their websites, though it can apply to website-only publications on a voluntary basis. (more…)

The Audit Bureau of Circulations has issued a statement following its inquiry into allegations the Wall Street Journal Europe was involved in a complex circulation-boosting scam.
It was reported in October that 31,000 out of 75,000 copies of the European edition of the WSJ were sold to companies in bulk and then distributed to students. It was also claimed that the WSJ effectively ended up buying some off the copies itself, after a sponsor pulled out, and that the deal included favourable editorial coverage. (more…)

The Financial Times has raised its cover price for the second time in three months - up from £2.20 on weekdays to £2.50. The Weekend edition on Saturdays is to rise from £2.80 to £3.
The move comes amid a backdrop of rising newsprint prices and the increasing success of the FT’s digital subscriptions business. In November, the FT revealed that it now had 250,000 paying digital subscribers. (more…)

Artist and editorial illustrator Ronald Searle, who has died aged 91, began his career aged 15 after sending in drawings on spec to the Cambridge Evening News, The Guardian notes in its obituary today.
After returning from World War Two he created the St Trinians cartoon for Lilliput magazine and in the 1950s he was a regular contributor to Punch. (more…)

Counsel for the phone-hacking victims David Sherborne appeared to think he was ambushing former Mirror editor Piers Morgan with a terribly incriminating smoking gun at the end of Morgan’s Leveson testimony yesterday.
But Morgan was ready for the accusation that the Mirror suppressed information about phone-hacking in 1998 and then used it for its own heinous means. And Sherborne ended up, it must be said, looking like a bit of a wally.

The Guardian has agreed to a request from Sun managing editor Richard Caseby that it correct all the articles it has published since July this year which repeat the claim that the News of the World deleted Milly Dowler’s voicemail’s creating false hope for her parents that she was alive. (more…)

The NUJ has finally shed some light on why it allowed News of the World private investigator Derek Webb to become a member of the union.
Roy Greenslade reports that it was told he was a researcher who had worked for a number or national newspapers, that he was seconded by two members and that it does not have the resources to subject all applications to further scrutiny. (more…)

The Guardian has announced plans to cut £1m a year from its editorial budget by “rationalising” sub-editors and cutting back on the use of casuals.
A spokesman told Press Gazette that this was not a redundancy announcement and that no redundancies were accompanied by the changes.
It has also revealed plans to axe the stand-alone sport section from Tuesday to Friday (returning it to the back of the paper) and to also drop the Friday Film and Music supplement (merging that into the features section). This follows the axing of The Guardian’s seperate Media, Education and Society sections earlier this year.
One or two pages will be cut from sport, The Guardian reports, and comment will be cut from five pages to four with obituaries cut from two to one. (more…)
