Exiled journalist Charles Atangana wins right to stay in UK

Exiled Cameroon journalist Charles Atangana has obtained asylum status, after a three-year-battle against deportation, the National Union of Journalists has confirmed.

Atangana, an investigative journalist, fled Cameroon after receiving death threats for exposing corruption. (more…)

Former Western Morning News editor nominated for British Sports Books Award

Barrie Williams, former editor of the Kent Evening Post, the Nottingham Evening Post and the Western Morning News was nominated today in the British Sports Books Awards for the biography of the year, at the London Book Fair.

He is nominated for ‘Get in there!’, the life story of Tommy Lawton, the late England football star, reckoned to be England’s best ever centre forward. (more…)

NUJ delegates meet in Southport for annual conference

The three-day National Union of Journalists delegate meeting in Southport started this morning. The delegates will discuss more than 150 motions, and determine the NUJ’s policy for the future.

NUJ president Pete Murray said: “This conference is an opportunity to take some time to look back and learn from our successes from the last 18 months. But it is our central task here to look forward - to study the threats we face, and come to grips with how we will fight them together, in unity, with confidence and determination.”

You can follow the conference as it unfolds via the NUJ’s live blog and news feed. Journalism students attending the meetings have been asked to tweet every detail of the conference. The hashtag is #nujdm

NCTJ organises contest to seek new journalism talent

The National Council for the Training of Journalists is looking for “the Stars of the Future” through a competition in partnership with more than 70 regional newspapers, as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations.

The competition starts on 18 April, and is open to anyone between 16 and 18. Participants will submit an original and unpublished 200-word story about events or issues in their local communities, schools or families to regional newspapers for judging. (more…)

115 journalists apply to cover Berlusconi sex trial

At least 115 journalists have requested accreditation to cover Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s sex crime trial, which starts today.

Masses of TV crews are setting up outside the court building in Milan. It is the first time a sitting European leader has been tried for having sex with an under-aged prostitute. (more…)

Liberty to distribute magazine inside other titles

Starmer defends CPS’s role in phone-hack probe

The director of public prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, today defended the Crown Prosecution Service’s role in the News of the World phone-hacking investigation.

Starmer was giving oral evidence to the home affairs select committee and appeared to contradict John Yates, the acting deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, who had stated that the Crown Prosecution Service legal advice had limited his investigation because of its legal interpretation. Two journalists freed in Syria and Libya

Reuters has confirmed that one of its photographers, Khaled al-Hariri, a Syrian national, was freed by the Syrian authorities yesterday after being detained for six days.

The 50-year old, who has worked for Reuters for 20 years, had been snatched on his way to work in Damascus on Monday 28 March. (more…)
