ABCe: Brand Republic traffic up 176% in a year

Brand Republic, the media and communications website, has published its first ABCe Enhanced Certificate – revealing detailed statistics about its users.

Traffic in October 2008 was 689,480 unique users - up 176 per cent year on year.

The ABCe Enhanced Certificate brings together ABCe audited traffic data and visitor information collected via an on-site survey.

This allows digital media owners to analyse information on the age, gender and social grade of their users, as well as determining their country of residence.

Washington Post appoints first female managing editor

The Washington Post has appointed two new managing editors – one of them the first woman to hold the title in the paper’s history.

Elizabeth Spayd will be responsible for the hard-news sections of the newspaper, with Raju Narisetti, a former deputy managing editor of the Wall Street Journal, overseeing the feature sections, including Style.

Spayd – who joined The Post in 1988 as an assistant business editor – said it feels “pretty cool” to break the gender barrier and that she hopes to increase The Post’s appeal to female readers. Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli said: “Clearly, it’s a good thing. We aspire to have as many perspectives in senior jobs as possible.

Fiona Dent appointed managing director of IPC Connect

IPC Media has announced the appointment of Fiona Dent as managing director of Woman’s Weekly division, IPC Connect.

Charlie Meredith, the current publishing director of What’s on TV and TV Easy, will become managing director of IPC TX. (more…)

Marcus Rich is new Mail on Sunday managing director

Associated Newspapers today announced the appointment of Marcus Rich as managing director for the Mail on Sunday and deputy managing director of Mail Newspapers.

Rich was previously at Emap, where he was in charge of two divisions – Emap Lifestyle Magazines and Emap Advertising, with a portfolio including Heat, Grazia, Closer, FHM and Q magazines. (more…)

Economist launches free weekly SMS service in the UK

From this Friday, Economist readers in the UK can receive a free, weekly text message containing details of the cover story in that week’s magazine.

The Economist hopes the free SMS service - accessible by texting ALERT to 80801 - will offer readers “a useful reminder” of what the magazine offers.

Publisher Yvonne Ossman said: “We hope it will inspire those less familiar with our magazine to take a second look, so they don’t miss out on the stories that matter to them.”

Obituary published for Daily Mirror executive Bill Soutar

The Times has today published the obituary of newspaper executive Bill Soutar, who died on 6 December 2008, aged 88.

William Richard Soutar began his 53-year journalism career as a messenger boy at the Daily Mirror in 1934 before working his way up through the ranks to become picture editor, art editor and executive editor. (more…)
