Journalists still stuck in Tripoli’s Rixos hotel amid reports of nearby mortar and RPG fire

While both the rebel and Gaddafi forces claim control over Tripoli, dozens of journalists are still understood to be trapped in the Rixos hotel in the city.

Among them is the BBC’s Matthew Price, who reported on Sunday that there were 35 journalists still in the hotel.

Speaking on Radio 4’s Today Programme , Price revealed how Gadaffi’s son Seif al-Islam had visited the hotel at 1.15am this morning - disproving widespread reports that he had been captured by rebel forces. (more…)

National press fees for freelance football match reports falling

Sports journalist can earn as little as £30 for a Saturday national press match report, with no expenses, according to Norman Giller.

He said that this was the fee paid by some news agencies to freelances.

Writing on the Sports Journalists’ Association website, Giller said that according to SJA members, the going rate for a Premier League Sunday match report is between £120 and £180. (more…)

St Bride’s memorial service planned for Anton Hammerl

The family of Surrey-based photojournalist Anton Hammerl, killed in Libya by pro-Gaddafi forces on 5 April, are to hold memorial service in his honour on 8 September at St Bride’s Church, Fleet Street, from 3pm.

Hammerl, 41, went to Libya in March to cover the unfolding conflict there as a freelance. After going missing on 5 April, his family, thinking that he was detained by Libyan government in Tripoli, mounted a campaign for his release.

In late May they learnt that on he was killed in the desert, just outside of Brega, on the day he went missing when a group of journalists came under fire from pro-Gaddafi forces. His body has yet to be found.

Motor Sport’s Bill Boddy: ‘Longest serving working journalist in UK’

The Guardian has paid tribute to William Boddy, the former editor of Motor Sport who has died last month at 98.

Known to his devoted readers as Bill, or as “WB”, he was - according to the Guardian - possibly the longest-serving working journalist in Britain. He submitted his first article for Motor Sport in 1930 and the last one just one week before he died. (more…)
