Photographer claims Newsweek butchered his photo

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, David Hume Kennerly, has launched an attack at Newsweek for cropping his photo and taking it out of context.

The American magazine ran an image of former vice president, Dick Cheney, butchering meat on a bloody carving board, which Kennerly said was cropped from the original image of Cheney preparing dinner together with his family.

Wall Street Journal to charge for mobile content

The Wall Street Journal confirmed today it will begin to charge for its mobile phone content next month.

News Corporation chief, Rupert Murdoch, announced earlier this week, the separate subscription charge for iPhone, iPod Touch and Blackberry users will begin from 24 October.

Sunday Times Style magazine gets a new look

The Sunday Times has revamped the design of its Style magazine and is heralding the relaunch with a super-sized one-off edition this week.

The new look is backed by a Vivienne Westwood-fronted marketing campaign to promote the bumper “Big Fashion” issue, including a TV and cinema advert voiced by Sadie Frost.

Carmarthernshire Council to launch internet TV station

Carmarthenshire Council plans to launch a new internet TV channel.

The news comes just a week after the Newspaper Society, the body representing regional publishers, asked the Office of Fair trading to assess the impact of council publications on local papers.

Independent’s Johann Hari gets four Comment Awards nominations

Independent columnist, Johann Hari, is up for four awards at this year’s Editorial Intelligence Comment Awards, making him the most-nominated commentator across all categories.

He notches up four of the five nominations the Independent has been shortlisted for, including Commentariat of the Year, Best Environmental Comment, Cultural Commentator and Poison Pen: Polemicist of the Year. (more…)

Sun admits it was fooled by terrorism ‘expert’

The Sun today admitted it had been duped by a phoney terrorism expert, who leaked a faked fundamentalist list of Jewish targets, including Lord Alan Sugar, which was then splashed on its front page.

Glen Jenvey had posed as a fundamentalist on an extemist website and encouraged others to suggest names for the list which he then leaked to a news agency used by the The Sun.

Health Writer’s Award shortlist announced

The Guild of Health Writers’ has annouced the shortlist for its 2009 Awards with journalist Jerome Burne leading the field with two nominations.

Burne has been shortlisted for best national newspaper health feature for his peice Mobiles - Are We Being Told The Facts? which appeared in the Daily Mail along with a nomination as the best comsumer magazine feature writer for The Truth About CJD which was published in Candis.

The awards, presented annually to recognise excellence in health writing, offer nominees the chance to vye for £6,000 prize money - with £700 awarded to the first place in each category and £350 to the second place winner.

Irish Times journalist ‘touched’ by Chris de Burgh ‘garbage bins of despair’ jibe

The critic who received an aggressive complaint letter from Chris de Burgh after he wrote a scathing gig review has hit back at the Irish singer.

Irish Times reporter, Peter Crawley, told Hot Press magazine: “Obviously, I was surprised that it evidently was so wounding and clearly stuck in his craw. But the alternative is criticism which is nothing but unmitigated praise and I don’t think that’s especially helpful either.” (more…)

PA journalist wins first Woman of Substance award

A Press Association features writer who was left virtually blind after a car crash and lost her newborn son just over a year later won the first Woman of Substance award last week.

Lisa Salmon, 42, of Hosforth, Leeds, was presented with the prize by Barbara Taylor Bradford, author of the novel A Woman of Substance, which marks its 30th anniversary this year.
