Barry Bolton: Former Telegraph and Times journalist standing as Green party candidate

A former Sunday Telegraph and Sunday Times journalist is standing as a Green Party candidate in the upcoming general election.

Barry Bolton is standing for the first time as a candidate in the Southend West constituency currently held by Conservative MP David Amess.

Bolton began his journalism career working for local newspapers in Essex. He then worked for several years in Africa and China before joining the team that would launch The Independent in 1986.

Bolton has also held senior positions at The Sunday Telegraph and was assistant business editor at The Sunday Times. He currently works for the NHS Choices website and as a legal proof-reader for a City law firm.

Guardian launches iPad photography app

Guardian News and Media has created its first downloadable application for the newly launched Apple iPad.

Although the iPad is still unavailable in the UK, the Guardian Eyewitness Photography app is now available to download, the company said today.

The free app, launched in conjunction with Canon, is aimed at showcasing the recent images from The Guardian’s Eyewitness daily series of photographs.

The app allows users to save and share favourite images.  Each image is also accompanied by a “pro-tip” for professional insight into how the picture was crafted.

The launch of the iPad app follows the successful launch by GMN of a Guardian news iPhone app created. That app was downloaded more than 100,000 times in the first four months, 9,000 within the first two days of the launch.

Other media groups are following are developing apps in preparation for the iPad launch in the UK.

Paparazzi news agency, Splash, has also created an iPad app to showcase its breaking celebrity news.

April fools: oh, how we nearly laughed…

With the wit and sophistication of a gurning competition this morning’s papers waded into April Fools Day in typical style.

Although ferrets have been used in the past with construction work the photo of a blond ferret - complete with hi-vis vest and “ferrets at work sign” - could only mean one thing. The Telegraph gag story span a line about Virgin Media using the furry mammals to “bridge the digital divide between cities and rural areas” by laying cables for its broadband service. (more…)

The awards will be held at the Radisson BLU Hotel, Glasgow, on Thursday April 22.

World Press Freedom debate on unregulated online political comment

The World Press Freedom Day London debate will take place on Friday 9 April at the Frontline Club in London.

This year’s debate is on the role of online media in the general election with the motion: “Unregulated political comment online helps the democratic process”.

The panel includes chief operating officer of the BBC, Caroline Thomson and Sir Robert Worcester, founder of MORI.

The event is free but those wishing to attend need to Register .

Remains of photojournalist Sean Flynn may have been found in Cambodia

Human remains believed to be of US photojournalist Sean Flynn may have been found in Cambodia, forty years after he went missing - The Independent reports.

Flynn, son of Hollywood actor Errol Flynn, was reporting for Time Magazine in Cambodia and disappeared after attempting to cross a hostile checkpoint on 6 April, 1970. (more…)

PG election poll: ‘Public are influenced by journalists, whether they believe it or not’

Pollsters have suggested that a new survey revealing that nine out of ten Britons believe their general election voting decision will be unaffected by any particular news organisation should be taken with a pinch of salt.

The survey, which appears in the April edition of Press Gazette, asked a weighted sample of 1,000 members of the British public whether one particular broadcaster, publication or website will affect their voting decision at the next general election. Ninety per cent said they are not affected by the media when deciding who to vote for. (more…)

David Yelland admits he was drunk when Sun ran exposes on Lenny Henry, Ian Botham and Sophie Rhys-Jones

David Yelland, former editor of The Sun, spoke to the London Evening Standard today on his time as a Murdoch editor, alcoholism nearly killing him and the launch of his new book.

Yelland confessed to being drunk for most of the five years he edited The Sun.

He admitted to drinking beer and wine in his office from the early afternoon onwards, adding “people around me were starting to say I had a problem, although I kept it hidden from them”. (more…)

Expose the BNP is holding a  question time evening with journalists Dominic Carman and Marc Vallee who will be providing insight on how to cover the far-right party in the upcoming general election.

The event is being held at 7pm in the NUJ Building, King’s Cross, on Wednesday 7 April.

NCTJ Diversity Fund open for aspiring journalists

Students from diverse backgrounds wishing to pursue a career in journalism could receive financial help from the NCTJ Diversity Fund - which is now accepting applications.

The Diversity Fund aims to support the training of people wishing to study journalism but struggle with the funding of a NCTJ-accredited course. (more…)
