Comic Graham Linehan says Today is ‘poisoning discourse’ after car-crash Justin Webb interview

The Today programme has been accused of “poisoning discourse in this country” by comic writer Graham Linehan after something of a ‘car-crash’ interview with Justin Webb on the Today programme.

Linehan – the writer behind comedies such as Father Ted, Black Books and the IT Crowd – claimed he was “ambushed” into a “typical Today programme bunfight”, after being invited on to the show to discuss his part in a new stage adaptation of The Ladykillers. (more…)

Commons Speaker John Bercow brands Daily Mail ’sexist’ and ‘racist’

The Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, has sparked controversy after calling the Daily Mail “sexist” and “racist”.

Bercow, who is a Conservative MP but as Speaker must remain impartial, said the newspaper was a “sexist, racist, bigoted, comic cartoon strip” and joked that calling the Mail a newspaper was breaking the trade descriptions act, reported The Guardian.

He made the comments at a question and answer session with political commentator Steve Richards at Kings Place in London.

Richard Norton-Taylor leaves Guardian staff after 38 years

The Real Hustle breached guidelines in using extras

BBC Three’s The Real Hustle was found to be in breach of accuracy guidelines today by the corporation’s Editorial Standards Committee after allegations about the use of actors reported by the Mail on Sunday and Sunday Mirror.

The committee, part of the BBC Trust, also concluded that there had not been a serious breach of editorial standards.

Yorkshire Post launches Business Club

Businesses in the north of England have been given a new ideas sharing forum as The Yorkshire Post launched its Business Club in Leeds this week.

Open to all companies shortlisted in the last five years of the Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business Awards, the Business Club will hold about four events a year. (more…)
