The week ahead: Campbell at Leveson, the Olympic torch and the Dalai Lama visits St Paul’s

A guide to the big diary news stories of the week ahead provided by Foresight News.

The Leveson truth-juggernaut rolls on this Monday with former Labour Director of Communications Alastair Campbell hauled before Brian’s Inquiry to answer questions on the relationship between the press and politicians. Campbell, whose time as Tony Blair’s chief spinner included such highlights as that dodgy dossier, has, like Andy Coulson last week, spent time on both sides of the media-politico fence, having been poached by the party from the fondly-remembered Today newspaper.

A tale told too much - the paediatrician vigilantes

Posted by Press Gazette on 11 May 2012 at 14:01
Tags: Journalism

This piece appeared in Press Gazette magazine two years ago. We republish it here after the issue of a paediatrician wrongly being attacked in the wake of a 2000 News of the World campaign reared its head again at the Leveson Inquiry. As this piece reveals, a fairly minor graffiti incident became the source of a pervasive urban myth.

Ten years on it is time the strange tale of the paediatrician confused with a paedophile was finally put to bed, says Brendan O’Neill, who reported on the orginal story for the BBC

Ten years ago this month, persons unknown – probably teenage scallies, according to local police – daubed the word ‘Paedo’ on the home of a paediatrician in Gwent in south Wales. They could never have known that their daft antics would become one of the most hotly discussed, frequently revisited, distorted and mythologised crimes of modern times.

It was 28 August in the year 2000. Yvette Cloete, a 30-year-old South African working as a trainee paediatrician in Gwent, returned home to find the word ‘Paedo’ painted on her front door.

Independent on Sunday editor called in to see Leveson over Coulson story

Posted by Press Gazette on 10 May 2012 at 10:06
Tags: National Newspapers, Newspapers

The editor of The Independent on Sunday, John Mullin, has been summoned to appear at the Leveson Inquiry today over a story that apparently contained details from Andy Coulson’s witness statement.

Lord Justice Leveson said he had used Section 21 of the Inquiries Act to summon Mullin, the first time this has happened to a national newspaper editor at the inquiry.

Leveson had previously stated on several occasions that no witness statements should be made public until they had been given in evidence at the inquiry.

The week ahead: Mulcaire, the Queen’s speech and Rebekah Brooks at Leveson

Posted by Press Gazette on 8 May 2012 at 10:39
Tags: Journalism

On Tuesday disgraced private investigator Glenn ‘Trigger’ Mulcaire continues to fight an order compelling him to reveal the names of News International bosses who ordered the wonder-goal scorer to hack the phones of numerous victims of crime, as well as the criminals themselves, slebs, PR executives and philandering Labour politicians. The Supreme Court hearing will be the former AFC Wimbledon star’s third attempt to overturn the order, before, if defeated once more, he’ll no doubt turn to the News of the World’s erstwhile friend – the European Court of Human Rights.

Hopes are high that Defamation Bill will be in Wednesday’s Queen’s Speech

The Libel Reform Campaign has said it is confident the long-awaited Defamation Bill will be included in the Queen’s Speech on Wednesday.

According to the group, the bill is then expected to be tabled early in the next parliamentary session.

Hopes are high that the bill will tackle libel tourism, provide new defences for responsible journalism, stop the persecution of individuals for discussing matters in the public interest and include action to reduce the huge costs involved in the English libel system

In a press release the Libel Reform Campaign said: (more…)

Government applies for core participant status at Leveson

Posted by Press Gazette on 4 May 2012 at 09:25
Tags: Journalism, National Newspapers, Newspapers

The Government has applied to be given “core participant status” at the Leveson Inquiry into press standards,

In a statement on its website, the inquiry said it will sit at 2pm today to hear the government’s application, which if successful would see it given the right to see inquiry documents and witness statements in advance.

The move comes ahead of evidence next week from former News International executives Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson, which could potentially embarrass Prime Minister David Cameron.

Core participant status would also give the Government the right to put questions to other witnesses through its lawyers.

Leading media lawyer Chris Hutchings, a partner at Hamlins, said this was a “controversial move by the Government, coming late in the day”, adding: “This is an attempt to protect the Government at a time when the actions of key ministers such as Jeremy Hunt are scrutinised by the Inquiry The basis on which they are making the application is unclear.”

Cameron set up the Leveson Inquiry last July in response to revelations that the now-defunct News of the World hacked murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler’s phone after she disappeared in 2002.
