The Sun has launched a new app for iPhones and Android devices which it is selling for £4.99 a month.
The app, which has an introductory price of 69p for 30 days, includes live football scores, a Sun Scan button to access extra content by scanning QR codes in the paper and access to extra video content. (more…)

The possibility that there was an email-hacking scandal brewing at The Times first emerged in a few lines of written evidence published by the Leveson Inquiry on 10 January, and exploded yesterday as Times editor and News International issued a comprehensive mea culpa about the affair.

The Sun and Mail Online both published articles today attacking the internet “ghouls” that spread “twisted rumours” about Gary Speed after his death last year- in contrast to the “sympathetic” coverage of the mainstream media.
It comes after Gary Speed’s brother-in-law Anthony Haylock backed an attack on the “totally unfounded rumours that swept across the internet” after Speed’s death, when he retweeted the following message from ex-Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan yesterday: (more…)

Twitter’s decision to introduce a new “censorship policy” could prove to be a blessing in disguise to enterprising journalists.
The US-based social network has decided “to reactively withhold” content from users on a country-by-country basis.
It says the change will enable it to “enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression”.

Plans for a Sunday edition of The Sun have been put on hold following the arrest of four senior journalists over the weekend, according to the Financial Times (behind paywall).
A report this morning said the plans are known as “Project X” – but claimed sources had “downplayed” reports that a launch date of 29 April “had been set in stone”.

Magazine Golwg has launched what it claims to be the first ever app for a Welsh language title.
Ap Golwg is available to download on the iPad, iPhone and iPod and allows users buy a digital version of the weekly title, which includes additional video and sound content.
The digital magazine - which was was developed with the support of the Wales Books Council - can be bought by either a 12-month, 6-month or 3-month subscription package or for £1.49 per copy.

A relaxation in the rules on handling user-generated content on media websites is proving to be a mixed blessing.
It is just over two years since the High Court ruled that newspaper and magazine websites qualified as internet service providers (ISPs) and were NOT responsible for readers’ posts on talk boards. (more…)

Johnston Press chief executive Ashley Highfield has revealed that every newspaper in the group has a “healthy” profit margin of more than 20 per cent – and that he sees the company’s future “beyond print”.
In an interview with In Publishing, Highfield said:
Yes I have absolutely no previous newspaper experience but the board had already made the decision that the future of Johnston Press lay in moving the organisation beyond print and that was explained to me in the first sentence.
Not closing down print but moving beyond an almost entirely solus print operation.

A London newspaper will cease to be published in print after nearly 140 years.
Established in 1874, the Enfield Gazette is to become an online-only publication.
Previously owned by Trinity Mirror, the weekly was bought in 2007 by Tindle Newspapers along with 26 other London titles.

A news agency has expressed unease over how Google News operates and criticised the search engine’s reluctance to discuss the “closely guarded” criteria it uses to judge media organisations.
Michael Leidig, the founder and owner of Vienna-based Central European News, believes the formula it uses to rank entries on its news page “doesn’t work”, or at not least not “under the terms that anyone who is a professional in the news business would understand… And nobody at Google seems prepared to comment on why”.
CEN was founded in 1993 and generates around 50 stories news items a day, along with pictures and video content.

Reuters has launched a new YouTube Channel called Reuters TV covering hard news, finance, politics, technology and special investigations.
Reuters said the channel marks its entry into the “rapidly growing business of online video programming” and that it employs a “creative editing style that is suited for internet programming and does not mimic traditional TV”. (more…)

French journalist Frederic Filloux has suggested that print edition price increases at the Financial Times and New York Times are intended to drive readers behind online paywalls.
Last week the FT raised its Monday to Friday cover price from £2.20 to £2.50.
The New York Times has also increased its weekday cover price, from $2 to $2.50. Both titles are currently rapidly adding digital subscribers - with the FT boasting 250,000, and the NYT claiming 324,000. (more…)

Trinity Mirror has announced the £8m acquisition of Communicator Corp, a digital communications company specialising in providing email and mobile communications.
According to a release sent out this morning Communicator Corp reported revenues of £3.5m and operating profit of £1m in its latest accounts to the year ended 31 March 2011.

The Guardian has amended an article which alleged The Sun had run a “public countdown” to the day when singer Charlotte Church reached the age of sexual consent.
It is the fourth time since July that The Guardian has been prompted to publish a retraction, amendment or apology after stating as fact damaging allegations about the conduct of journalists at The Sun or the News of the World which have later turned out to be untrue. (more…)

The Sun publisher News Group Newspapers has won its appeal against rules which could have seen the video section of its website being monitored by the regulator Authority for Television On-Demand (ATVOD).
The ruling has resulted in ATVOD dropping similar cases against publishers including The Sunday Times, the FT, The Guardian and The Independent. (more…)

The Press Complaints Commission has assured journalists that new restrictions on researching stories “in the public interest” will not compromise their confidential sources.
Yesterday, the Editors’ Code Committee announced that from January 1, 2012, it will tighten up the way the code’s public interest defence is used. (more…)

Here’s some practical tips on Tweeting from court, following the Lord Chief Justice’s announcement last week.
1. A journalist or a legal commentator CAN Tweet from a public court case without asking the judge first. If you’re not sure if you’re a journalist or a legal commentator, then you’re probably not one! Best to check with the court – see point 5, below.
2. Live blogging etc by journalists or legal commentators is also acceptable – they can use other media than Twitter.
3. Mobile devices must be set to silent.
4. Tweeting should be silent, unobstrusive and carried out with hand-held devices – not laptops or notebooks. (more…)

Johnston Press has this week rolled out mobile versions for its 211 websites across the UK and Ireland.
In a release the company said:
The sites feature news, sport, lifestyle and community content, with video also now
available.
The group’s successful Find it directory is embedded within the mobile sites, enabling users to search for and check out local businesses and services whilst on the move.
There are also links to the online jobs and local deals platforms.
JP has appointed YOC, which operates one of the leading premium publisher mobile
advertising networks in the UK, to represent JP’s mobile advertising to agencies.
